12/9/2023 0 Comments Adams funeral home paw paw miSandy is survived by her one daughter, Jennifer (Chad) Barnhart of Paw Paw, grandchildren Makayla and Karsen Barnhart, her sister, Josephine (Jay-Jay) Germaine of Paw Paw, four nephews, Frank Germaine of Paw Paw, Gary (Carol) Mitchell of Mattawan, Rick (Sherrie) Mitchell of Paw Paw and Jerry (Ricky) Mitchell of New York, many great and great great nieces and nephews, special friends, Jim and Marcie Bremmer of Paw Paw and her southern sister, Pam Wallace. On August 26, 1967, in Lawton, Sandy was united in marriage to Neal Leonard Wallace, who preceded her in death October 9, 2014. She always looked forward to attending the opening for her nephew, Jerry Mitchell’s, Broadway shows and attending Michigan Wolverine Football games. She could always be found at the Paw Paw Redskins Football games, along with basketball and volleyball games. Sandy enjoyed watching her grandchildren play sports. After retiring for two years, Sandy returned to work for the Van Buren County Mental Health Authority in the Recipient Rights Office. Sandy went to work for Van Buren Mental Health for 26 years. Her husband’s company, Eaton Corporation, transferred the family to Belmond, Iowa, where Sandy worked as a part time nurse for three years. She worked at Lakeview Hospital Emergency Room for 12 years before transferring to the Bronson Burn Unit for eight years. Sandy was a graduate of Paw Paw High School Class of 1964, and Kalamazoo School of Practical Nursing in 1966. She was born August 18, 1946, in Paw Paw, the daughter of the late Dorothy (Klazura) and Joseph Mitchell. The last twenty plus years of her life were spent in the loving care of Sally and Dave Parker and then at Bronson Commons. She had friends of many years duration and shared good memories with them. Her sisters have memories of fun times spent with her at the farm of their grandparents and the family cabin in northern Michigan. They remember with great fondness the many books she read to them and the movies she took them to see. She was a devoted daughter, granddaughter and niece, as well as a wonderful aunt to her nieces and nephews. She spent the many long years she lived in the love of her family. She longed for that part of her life to return but it was not to be. Sadly serious health issues cut short her teaching career. While visiting her in the classroom she told a sister “if I have made any difference in this life it is here in this room”. She was a wonderful teacher and loved her work with the students. Kay became a fifth grade teacher in the Paw Paw elementary school system. She shared that trip with the family back home through delightful expressive letters. While she was in undergrad school she studied abroad and then went on a memorable trip in Europe with other members of Western Michigan University. She went on to Western Michigan University for her bachelor and master's degrees. A joyful celebration of Kay's life will be held this summer. She passed from this life on Maat Bronson Commons, Mattawan, MI.
